16TH AVENUE DENTAL is pleased to be your choice for NW Calgary Children’s Dentistry. One of the most common questions parents have is “When should my child have their first dental visit?” At 16TH AVENUE DENTAL, we recommend all child have their first dental appointment either by the age of six months or when the first tooth erupts, whichever happens first. Early dental visits are important for a number of reasons. When you bring your young child to our office on a regular basis, we have the opportunity to build a trusting relationship with your child.
Even though your child may not have any dental concerns or only one or two teeth, the more they visit the office, the more comfortable they become. These first visits are known as a Happy Visit. During a Happy Visit, we will show your child around the office, talk to them about their teeth and their brushing habits, and invite them to take a “ride” in the dental chair. If your child is comfortable with us looking in their mouth, Dr. My Le will count their teeth as she checks for signs of decay and examines the mouth for anything unusual or that may be a concern. Depending on how your child reacts to this visit will determine how we continue. Some children allow us to complete their dental cleaning and others require more patients. Unless we see something that is of a concern, we will not proceed with anything that upsets your child. Again, we are working towards building trust with your child.
As your child develops more teeth we look at introducing complete dental cleaning, examinations, and x-rays. Early dental visits help us spot areas of concern before they become bigger problems. If we notice deep grooves in the enamel surface of the biting (molar) teeth, we can place a protective coating, known as a tooth sealant, over the grooves to help protect the teeth and reduce the chance of decay forming in the grooves.
We understand that not every child is happy to visit the dentist. In cases where children display dental fear and dental anxiety, we offer sedation dentistry services for longer, more invasive appointments. Treatments such as dental fillings are completed with ease when incorporating the appropriate type of sedation for your child.
At 16TH AVENUE DENTAL, we pride ourselves on providing a fun, friendly, and positive dental experience for children of all ages. To learn more about our NW Calgary Children’s Dentistry services, please contact our office.
