While we always aim to save your natural teeth, sometimes teeth require extraction. At 16th Avenue Dental, we offer tooth extractions for patients with severe decay, gum disease, and fractures beyond repair.

Another common reason for removal includes making more space in the mouth while planning for orthodontic braces. Sometimes healthy teeth need to be removed just because they’re poorly positioned.

Our dentist Dr. My Le performs simple and more complex tooth extractions to keep your overall smile healthy, and we offer sedation dentistry to help ensure comfort.

Why Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?

Our NW Calgary dentist will guide you through each step of the process.

During your teeth cleaning and checkup appointment, our NW Calgary dentist determines if you require any tooth extractions. Our dental team takes a panoramic x-ray to see how the teeth are positioned in your jaw bone.

For wisdom teeth extractions, we also determine the exact position. If they’re impacted horizontally, wisdom teeth can change the bite or position of your teeth, which may lead to future dental problems.

Common reasons for extractions include:

  • Baby teeth that prevent adult teeth from erupting
  • Extra teeth that may cause tooth crowding
  • Orthodontic treatment requiring additional space
  • Badly decayed teeth that can’t be restored with root canals
  • Broken teeth beyond repair which can’t be saved
  • Wisdom teeth that are impacted or partially erupted in the mouth
  • Advanced gum disease that destroys the surrounding bone, making it impossible for teeth to remain in the mouth

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Our NW Calgary dentist may recommend a wisdom tooth extraction based on your examination and radiographs.

Wisdom teeth (aka third molars) are often extracted before or after they come in. They usually come in during the late teens or early 20s and may need removal if they’re decayed, cause pain, have a cyst or infection, or may lead to misalignment problems.

A common problem occurs when wisdom teeth get stuck in the jaw (impacted) and do not come in at all. This can irritate the gums, causing pain and swelling. In these cases, the tooth requires extraction, and if all four need removal, we usually take them out simultaneously.
