Dental Sealants create a protective shield over the enamel surface of each tooth. They are made from a dental resin material, similar to the white filling material used to restore decayed teeth. Dental Sealants are bonded to the tooth without the need for any preparation. They are used to help prevent tooth decay by filling the depressions and grooves of the teeth. Dental Sealants are especially beneficial in preventing tooth decay in children.
The chewing surface of the teeth contains grooves and crevices. In some cases, the grooves are too deep and brushing alone does not properly clean the teeth. When food and plaque become trapped, tooth decay may develop. Placing a dental sealant over the biting surface of the teeth greatly reduces the likelihood of dental decay from forming.
Placing a Dental Sealant does not require freeing and the appointment typically takes just under an hour. They are thin, protective coatings that adhere to the chewing surfaces of teeth.
