Jaw problems can be the source of significant discomfort. If you suffer from TMJ or TMD pain, headaches, clench or grind your teeth, or have unexplained tooth pain.
TMJ pain is often caused by a “bad bite” or what is technically referred to as malocclusion. In simple terms, how your teeth bite together can cause added strain on the head and neck muscles, joints and teeth. When the muscles of your head, face and jaw are overloaded, they compensate by continually contracting, which may lead to muscle spasm, pain, soreness. A headache, jaw pain, or pounding/crushing pain often follows.
During your Assessment, Dr. My Le will conduct a series of tests to determine the cause of your symptoms and come up with a treatment plane to alleviate your pain accordingly.
If you are diagnosed with a ‘Bad Bite’ we often start your treatment with a stabilization appliance, known as a nightguard. This appliance helps to distribute forces caused by clenching and grinding while protecting the enamel surface of the teeth from wear. A nightguard also repositions the jaw to help relax muscles, letting you get a better night’s sleep.
In more advanced cases, bite adjustments, orthodontic treatment, or replacing old fillings may be necessary to correct your TMJ pain. Your Assessment takes into account your lifestyle and helps us determine the best treatment for your situation.
